Rebecca Daynes faced a nightmare scenario in her own backyard when her beloved cat, Mabel, found herself in a life-threatening situation. A venomous snake, later identified as an eastern brown—the second most venomous snake in the world—had coiled itself tightly around Mabel’s neck. Armed with only a pair of salad tongs and sheer determination, Rebecca saved her cat in a dramatic and heroic rescue.

A Routine Day Turns into a Nightmare

Rebecca’s day began like any other until she noticed Mabel outside through the window. The sight froze her in shock—Mabel was struggling with a snake wrapped tightly around her neck. Despite Mabel’s health challenges, including a brain tumor that affected her mobility, she had managed another daring escape outside. This time, her adventurous spirit brought her face-to-face with danger.

The Heroic Rescue

Rebecca’s fear was immediate, but she didn’t hesitate. Grabbing the first tool she could find—a pair of tongs—she rushed outside to free Mabel. The snake’s grip was unrelenting, and Rebecca worked frantically to unwind it without harming her cat or provoking the dangerous predator further.

After a tense struggle, Rebecca succeeded in prying the snake off Mabel. Injured but alive, the snake slithered away into the bushland behind their home. Mabel, miraculously unharmed, was scooped into Rebecca’s arms for a thorough check.

When Rebecca sent a photo of the snake to experts, her worst fears were confirmed. It was an eastern brown snake, a species responsible for more human fatalities in Australia than any other snake. Though Mabel appeared fine, Rebecca knew the effects of venom could be delayed.

For the next 24 hours, Rebecca and her family took turns monitoring Mabel closely for any signs of distress. Despite the venomous snake encounter, Mabel showed no symptoms, remaining her usual feisty self.

Mabel’s Remarkable Resilience

Mabel’s brush with death seemed to faze her less than it did her family. Rebecca noted with amazement that the fearless feline was already plotting her next escape. “She clearly hasn’t learned any lessons,” Rebecca joked. Her humor masked the deep relief and gratitude she felt for having Mabel safe and sound.

Cherishing Every Moment

Mabel’s resilience has been a source of inspiration for Rebecca and her family. Despite her health struggles, Mabel continues to live life with tenacity and a fearless spirit. Rebecca reflects on how precious every moment with Mabel has become, knowing that their time together may be limited.

“Between this and her brain tumor, I’m starting to think she’s immortal,” Rebecca quipped in a Facebook post.

A Bond Strengthened by Survival

This harrowing experience has only deepened Rebecca’s bond with her beloved cat. “We are extremely grateful we still have her for a little while longer,” Rebecca shared. She remains determined to make the most of every moment with Mabel, whose adventurous spirit remains undimmed despite her challenges.

Mabel’s story is a testament to courage—both hers and Rebecca’s—and a reminder of the deep connections we share with our pets. For Rebecca, every day with her feisty, fearless cat is a gift, one she will never take for granted.
