Aries (March 21 – April 19): The Peregrine Falcon

Gemini is the zodiac’s most agile thinker. Quick, colorful, and always scanning multiple angles at once, Gemini thrives on variety and surprise. Gemini’s mutable nature is restless, and that mutability is directly expressed through its masculine nature, often coming out as a witty remark, a flippant hand gesture, and an overbooked schedule.

Enter the American kestrel, a raptor that refuses to be predictable. Renowned for its vibrant plumage, the American kestrel ranks as North America’s smallest falcon, and with a colorful appearance, it skillfully hunts grasshoppers, small mammals, and other prey, thriving in diverse habitats across the Americas from deserts to meadows.

Kestrels are the only birds of prey capable of hovering, and they are well-known for their unique hunting behavior, where they hover 65 feet in the air before swooping down on their prey, using the wind to keep them afloat. Cancer (June 21 – July 22): The Osprey

Cancer is deeply intuitive and fiercely devoted to those it loves. It moves between emotional depth and protective instinct with quiet ease. Ruled by the moon, Cancer’s psychic receptivity is incredible, and it is motherly, nurturing, and compassionate. Few signs feel more intensely.

The osprey carries that same devoted, water-bound energy. Ospreys, or sea hawks, are large raptors found throughout the world’s coasts, with fish making up the vast majority of their diet, and they have excellent vision that allows them to see their prey moving beneath the surface, even hovering feet first before hitting the water and completely submerging themselves.

The swallow-tailed kite is arguably the most visually striking raptor in North America. Mississippi and swallow-tailed kites, in particular, are masterful fliers, able to float in the air with ease even on windless days, twisting and turning with a slight move of the tail or wings, with their ability to catch small prey on the wing being unmatched.

Kites have long wings and spend much of their time soaring. They drift rather than force. Libra, who rarely rushes a decision, would recognize that philosophy immediately. Float. Observe. Then act, and do it beautifully.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): The Northern Goshawk

Scorpio is intense, private, and not to be underestimated. Where others might be content with what they can easily see or do, Scorpio’s courage takes it beyond, probing the depths to eliminate whatever is untrue, insincere, or no longer serving a useful purpose. It sees through surfaces. Always.

The northern goshawk is the raptor world’s equivalent of that energy. Northern goshawks are medium to large true hawks native to the Northern Hemisphere’s temperate regions, and were highly revered during the Middle Ages when people with noble stature used them for falconry, being today among the most prolific raptor predators in their range, rapidly maneuvering through mixed forests and woodlands at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

Northern goshawks are mainly solitary and can be highly territorial and aggressive, viciously defending their nests. Fiercely loyal to what’s theirs, hostile to intrusion, and operating largely out of sight. Scorpio’s entire identity, in feathered form.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): The Golden Eagle

Sagittarius lives for the wide open. Philosophical, adventurous, and constitutionally unable to stay small, this fire sign needs horizon. The archer shoots the arrow into the far distance, not knowing where it will land, and this is part of the excitement of life for Sagittarius, who identifies as a citizen of the world and longs to see all that it has to offer.

The golden eagle commands space on a scale few other creatures can. Golden eagles are among the coolest birds in existence, highly regarded in ancient and tribal cultures and one of the most familiar birds in falconry, being one of North America’s largest and fastest birds of prey.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): The Harris’s Hawk

Capricorn is the most disciplined builder in the zodiac. Strategic, patient, and drawn toward mastery, Capricorn understands that consistent effort over time produces results that brilliance alone cannot. Capricorn is the mountain goat, sure-footed in its determined ascent to the summit, with a trajectory always upwards, striving towards accomplishment and a position of respect.

The Harris’s hawk exhibits a rare raptor behavior called communal hunting, and this species will remain together as a family unit so the group can cooperatively hunt prey as large as jackrabbits. Red-tailed hawks are highly tameable and trainable, with a more social disposition than all other falcons or hawks other than Harris’s hawk. The Harris’s hawk is built for the long game, working within systems rather than against them. That’s Capricorn’s quiet superpower in one hunting party.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): The Snowy Owl

Aquarius is the zodiac’s true original. Unconventional, intellectually driven, and quietly ahead of its time, Aquarius operates from a different frequency than the rest. Aquarius is the sign of the water bearer, and the water pouring so generously from the jar is a symbol of knowledge acquired, thoughtfully processed, and then poured forth in a never-ending stream for the benefit of others.

Among raptors, the snowy owl occupies a world entirely its own.
