Abandoning a pup is one of the most heartless things you can do to your pet.
Sadly, cases of abandonment have surged in the U.S. in recent years. According to the University of Florida, this problem is especially prevalent in South Florida. These owners not only abandon their pets but often abuse them.
One particularly disturbing case occurred recently in Broward County…
Heartless Owners
On a cold February day, a couple traveling through South Florida noticed something unusual in the middle of the Florida Everglades in Broward County.
A pitiful creature lay curled up on the dirty ground, moaning softly in the dark. They quickly realized it was a dog.
He was filthy, visibly sad and wouldn’t even look them in the eyes. They assumed he had been abandoned and noticed he was weak. This poor dog had been starving for days and had lost hope that anyone would ever find him.
The couple knew they had to act fast, but despite their efforts, they couldn’t find help for almost four hours!
Officers on Duty
“We called all the rescuers and organizations for four full hours, but nobody responded,” the couple said. “In the end, the police came.”
Officers from the Broward Sheriff’s Office arrived to respond to the call of an “extreme case of abuse.”
One officer immediately showed kindness, offering the dog food and water. They gained some of his trust, but the dog was so weak he couldn’t move. Assisting him to the car was challenging, but they managed to get him there.
These brave officers demonstrated what it means to do this honorable job. Well done, and thank you for your service!
Consequences
After helping the dog, newly named Powder, and he was in stabilized his condition, the deputies contacted Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue.
They responded quickly and took Powder into their care. Sandra Dezelen, the founder of Dezzy’s Second Chance Animal Rescue, provided emergency medical care.
Sandra quickly concluded that Powder had been out there for a while and that his recovery would be long.
After extensive testing, they discovered Powder had a severe infection, causing redness all over his body. Additionally, Dr. Rob Schneider, a local eye surgeon, diagnosed Powder with entropion, necessitating surgery on both eyes.
A New Life
Despite being haunted by his traumatic experience, Powder was now in the safe hands of loving people.
Thanks to the dedicated care from Dezzy’s Second Chance, Powder healed from the red spots on his skin and his eye surgery was successful!
He gained four pounds and became a playful dog once again, filled with trust thanks to the love he received. His new dog brothers and sisters at Second Chance also boosted his confidence, bringing a smile back to his face.
Bottom Line
Although there wasn’t an official post, Sandra confirmed in a comment on the “Lost Pet Found Pet” Facebook page that Powder has been adopted and is now enjoying a new life filled with love in a deserving family.
We hope his new family will give him all the love he needs and help fully restore his trust in people.
