You might be relaxing on the couch, watching your favorite show, maybe halfway through a bag of chips… and a snake just casually glides past your feet like it owns the place.
That’s exactly what happened to a San Antonio family. They were watching TV when a 1.2-meter (4-foot) ball python made a sudden entrance in their apartment. No knock. No hiss. Just vibes.
Ball Python Sighting Sends Family into Panic Mode
The family quickly called Animal Care Services (ACS), which sent someone to investigate. The snake had slithered in and found a cozy hiding spot behind their dishwasher. It was probably just trying to beat the Texas heat like the rest of us.
Thankfully, the python was safely captured and removed—there were no injuries or major damage, but this is an unusual story that will be told for years.
How Did a Python Even Get In?

Ball pythons aren’t native to Texas. They’re originally from Africa and are usually kept as exotic pets because they’re not venomous and tend to be pretty calm. But they’re also escape artists.
ACS believes the snake was someone’s pet that got loose. No one in the apartment complex claimed it, which isn’t all that uncommon. Sometimes people release them when they get too big, or just don’t want them anymore.
What You Should Know About Exotic Pets

While ball pythons aren’t typically dangerous to humans, they might give you a heart attack if you’re not expecting to see one next to your laundry basket. And they’re still wild animals that require proper care—and secure enclosures.
If you live in a place where exotic pets are allowed, make sure to keep doors sealed and check with your neighbors if you see anything weird crawling across your floor.
As for the family in San Antonio? They’re doing fine now… though they admitted to triple-checking under the couch every night before bed.
