This famous South African rugby player has a long list of achievements, but this accomplishment that happened off the rugby field might just be his most important one: he rescues a stranded baby dolphin.

Dolphins are scary brainy creatures, one of the cleverest in the ocean, but yet they need some help from time to time. Strong currents are one of the biggest threats to baby dolphins and without Percy Montgomery’s intervention in this case it’s fairly certain that this little one wouldn’t have survived.

Percy Montgomery, a former South African rugby player, has added a new accomplishment to his already impressive resume. While this achievement did put his strength and throwing capabilities to the test, it did not involve any rugby balls of any sort.

Rather, this achievement was a moral one. On a beach near Cape Town, the ex-Springbok World Cup champion rescued a stranded dolphin calf not once, but three times, when it struggled to return to the ocean.

Montgomery’s heroic act took place on Arniston Beach in the Western Cape. As he was driving with friends, they noticed the young dolphin in distress. Without hesitation, Montgomery rushed down the beach to help the calf that was stranded near the surf.

According to marine experts, single dolphin strandings can occur for several reasons, including injury, illness, or disorientation.

In this case, the dolphin may have been disoriented by the currents. This becomes especially clear when it repeatedly ends up back on the shore despite getting assistance, and it’s only after a few of Montgomery’s rescue attempts that it’s successful.

The First Rescue Attempt

Montgomery’s first attempt to save the dolphin involved carefully picking up the calf and carrying it through the shallow waters. While the rugby legend successfully returned the animal to the ocean, the dolphin calf seemed confused and swam back toward the shore.

Undeterred, Montgomery tried a second time to help the dolphin. Again, he carried it out through the waves, hoping it would swim to safety. However, the dolphin seemed unable to regain its bearings and found itself back on the beach soon after.

On his third attempt, Montgomery’s perseverance paid off. He guided the calf back into deeper waters, and this time, the dolphin managed to swim away successfully. Onlookers were relieved as the dolphin disappeared into the ocean waves, seemingly free at last.

Dolphins are known for their intelligence and social nature. Strandings like this one can be particularly challenging for young dolphins, which depend on their pods for survival. Luckily, this calf encountered a Good Samaritan in the form of a rugby legend, who made all the difference.
