Orcas, also known as killer whales, are the largest members of the dolphin family and are recognized as one of the world’s most powerful predators.
Yet, the sight of them in the western North Atlantic Ocean is rare, making this spectacle all the more unusual and exciting. The “Old Thom” whale is one of the few orcas regularly seen in these waters.

Although their nickname may suggest otherwise, orcas are part of the dolphin family. These charismatic creatures have striking black-and-white coloring.
They are among the most intelligent marine species known for their strong social bonds. Interestingly, orcas have diverse diets, ranging from fish and seals to other marine mammals, depending on their specific population and location.

Orcas have been making headlines recently, not just in the U.S. but across the globe. Reports have come in of orcas attacking boats off the coast of southern Europe.
These incidents have puzzled scientists as the behaviour appears coordinated, showing the intelligence and complexity of these marine mammals.

Linnea is a born and bred Swede but spends as much time as possible in Cape Town, South Africa. This is mainly due to Cape Town’s extraordinary scenery, wildlife, and atmosphere (in other words, because Cape Town is heaven on earth.) That being said, Sweden’s majestic forests forever hold a special place in her heart. Linnea spends as much time as she can close to the ocean collecting sea shells or in the park admiring puppies.
