Craig Hensley, a biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Texas Nature Trackers program, was on a staff retreat at the Devils River State Natural Area when he noticed something unusual in the distance.

The nest, nestled in the side of a cliff wall, measured an impressive 15 feet across, making it one of the largest bald eagle nests ever recorded in the United States.

The Biggest Nest Ever?

The size of this nest rivals the record-holding nest found in Florida, which measured 8 feet across and 18 feet tall. However, the West Texas nest’s width is particularly noteworthy.

The location of the nest is equally surprising. Situated in the Chihuahuan Desert, this is one of the few documented cases of bald eagles nesting this far west in Texas.
