In 2017, Mark Longo rescued a tiny squirrel whose mother had been struck by a car in New York City. He named the orphaned creature Peanut, or “P’Nut,” and brought him home. What began as a compassionate act transformed into a bond that captivated millions online. Peanut became a social media sensation, skittering across Longo’s shoulders, nibbling waffles, and donning tiny cowboy hats. But in October 2024, their story took a devastating turn.
A Squirrel Raised Like Family
Longo bottle-fed Peanut and later attempted to release him into the wild. However, the squirrel returned injured, missing part of his tail. From that moment, Peanut lived indoors, cage-free, as part of the family. Longo chronicled their life together on social media, amassing over 500,000 followers by 2024. Peanut’s charm helped fund P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, which Longo and his wife, Daniela, founded to rescue animals in need.
A Sudden Seizure and Shocking Loss
On October 30, 2024, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials arrived at Longo’s home with a warrant. They seized Peanut and a raccoon named Fred, citing concerns over illegal wildlife possession and potential rabies exposure. During the seizure, Peanut bit a wildlife biologist through protective gloves. Despite efforts to rehome the animals, both were euthanized for rabies testing. The tests later returned negative, but the results came too late to prevent public outrage.
Public Outcry and Political Uproar
Peanut’s death sparked international backlash. Social media users flooded government agencies with messages of anger and grief. Prominent figures, including Elon Musk and political candidates, condemned the euthanasia as government overreach. The incident became a rallying point in political discourse, with some lawmakers proposing “Peanut’s Law” to prevent similar occurrences.
A New Companion and Ongoing Grief
In the aftermath, Longo and his wife adopted an 11-week-old miniature dachshund named Howard. Longo believes Howard may be Peanut’s reincarnation, noting the puppy’s similar behavior and bond with their cat. While Howard brings some comfort, Longo acknowledges that nothing can replace Peanut. As of March 2025, the couple has been unable to retrieve Peanut and Fred’s remains for burial, adding to their sorrow.
A Legacy That Endures
Peanut’s story is a poignant reminder of the deep connections that can form between humans and animals. His life and untimely death have ignited conversations about wildlife regulations, animal rights, and the responsibilities of pet ownership. Though he can no longer charm audiences with his antics, Peanut’s legacy continues to inspire and provoke thought about the intersection of compassion, legality, and the bonds we share with the animal world.
