Efforts by police and local security to contain the seal involved parking patrol cars around him. However, the seal managed to slip past, crossing a road and continuing up a sidewalk. He eventually stopped near a shopping mall, raising concerns among animal welfare officials about his distance from the ocean and the risk of exhaustion and dehydration.

Recognizing the potential danger to both the seal and the public, a team comprising marine wildlife specialists and a city veterinarian intervened. They sedated the seal and carefully guided him into an animal transport trailer. The seal was then transported to a nearby bay, where he could safely return to the ocean.

Southern elephant seals are the largest seal species, with males reaching weights up to 8,800 pounds. They are typically found in sub-Antarctic regions, making sightings in South Africa rare. Occasionally, young males may stray far from their usual habitats, leading to unusual encounters like this one.
