Paso Finos are prized for their signature smooth, four-beat gait, but their metabolism is where vets say the real trouble hides.

This breed sits on the same short list as some of the most metabolically fragile horses in the industry. Most people assume a taller, gaited riding horse is immune to the “pony problems” that affect Minis, but the data says otherwise. Vets say the breed’s naturally efficient, “easy keeper” build is precisely what makes it prone to insulin resistance under modern feeding conditions. Combined with Equine Metabolic Syndrome risk, that means routine bloodwork matters more for this breed than casual owners typically expect.
