Nobody knows exactly how many feral hogs live in America. They’re nocturnal, secretive and always moving, so any count is an educated guess. The working figure most researchers and USDA use is roughly six million animals nationwide.
What’s clearer is the direction of travel. Feral hogs have overtaken at least 35 states in the past 40 years. The nine states below show different sides of that problem, from long established strongholds to places where the fight is still winnable.
Texas: The Stronghold That Sets the Scale

Texas is where most people picture the hog problem, and for good reason. Nearly every kind of terrain there seems to support feral hogs. I’d call it the place where the idea of simply clearing them out stopped being realistic a long time ago.
The trend line matters more than the headcount. Sightings near suburban edges are becoming more common as hogs look for food and water. Texas is also on USDA’s 2026 list of states eligible for new eradication and control partnership funding, which tells you the work is ongoing rather than finished.
Florida: Warm Weather, Endless Cover

Florida’s climate is about as friendly to hogs as it gets. Its feral hog numbers have climbed steadily, with hundreds of thousands reported across many parts of the state. Wetlands, palmetto thickets and ranchland give them plenty of places to disappear.
Florida is another state named in the 2026 USDA funding round. Partners were invited to apply for feral swine projects there, along with several other states. Money helps, though hogs reproduce on a schedule that few budgets can match.
Alabama: New Counties, Quickly

Alabama has the ingredients hogs love. Food, cover and mild winters have let populations build and push into new counties quickly. That pattern is common across the Southeast.
The state is also hosting several 2026 pilot projects, including ones in Baldwin and Mobile counties and across parts of the Black Belt region. Those projects reflect a shift in approach. USDA says successful efforts involve neighboring landowners, state agencies and local partners working across the landscape rather than on single properties.
Arkansas: Fighting Hogs in Two Halves

Arkansas is split into two separate 2026 pilot projects, one in the east and one in the west. That’s a small detail, but it hints at how large and varied the territory is. A strategy that suits Delta farmland may not fit Ozark forest.
Hogs do their worst damage where crops and wetlands meet. They go after grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat, oats, peanuts and rice, along with many vegetables and fruits. For a farming state, that’s a long menu of things to lose.

Oklahoma: Watersheds on the Front Line

Oklahoma’s pilot projects for 2026 are organized around river basins, including the Cimarron, Neosho and North Canadian. Hogs follow water, so working by watershed makes practical sense. It’s trapping and removal planned around how the animals actually move.
The broader financial stakes are large. USDA estimates feral swine cause about two and a half billion dollars in agricultural losses every year. A 2026 NRCS estimate cited by one industry analysis runs even higher, so the true cost is likely not small.
California: Spreading Into Valuable Ground

California isn’t the first state people link with hogs, which is part of the concern. Sightings in previously low density areas suggest hogs are adapting to a wide range of California environments. That raises worries for vineyards, orchards and natural habitats.
Hogs also threaten wildlife more broadly. A USDA report says they’ve contributed to the decline of nearly 300 native plant and animal species in the United States. California, with its unusual native ecosystems, has a lot at stake.
Tennessee: Pushing Into New Territory

Tennessee shows up on nearly every list about hog expansion. Its populations are spreading into new areas, particularly in the western and central parts of the state. It also sits in an interesting spot between the Deep South and the Midwest.
That location raises a bigger issue, which is people moving hogs on purpose. In many states where feral hogs appeared recently, all of them arrived by vehicle rather than natural movement. Tennessee is among the states USDA lists as having eradication within reach, but only if new populations stay small.

Missouri: A Fight That Can Still Be Won

Missouri is a good example of a state where timing is everything. USDA classes it among the places where eradication is considered achievable. The program’s goal there is to eliminate feral swine where populations are low or newly emergent.
Missouri is also part of the 2026 funding round. Early action costs far less than chasing established herds later. Even so, a single illegal release can undo years of careful trapping.
Ohio: A Small Footprint With a Big Warning

Ohio’s hog numbers are nowhere near those of southern states. Still, reported sightings in multiple counties represent ongoing northern expansion. The numbers are small, but the direction is the point.
Disease is the major worry for northern pork country. Illegal movement of hogs from the South to the Midwest could introduce swine disease into major pork producing states. Ohio is among the states USDA lists as having a realistic chance at eradication, which makes this a case of prevention versus regret.

Final Thoughts

My view is that the hog fight is lost in a few places and still very winnable in others. The mistake is treating all nine of these states as the same problem. In the Deep South, agencies are managing damage. In places like Missouri and Ohio, they might still finish the job.
The uncomfortable part is that people keep making it harder. Illegal transport and release have helped seed new populations, and that’s a human choice, not a natural one. Funding rounds like the 2026 push of tens of millions of dollars are welcome, but they’ll only matter if the public stops moving hogs and landowners keep working together across fence lines.
