When Lexy found Dalai, she never imagined he would grow into a record-breaking therapy animal. But at 27 years old, Dalai isn’t just the world’s oldest llama—he’s also a source of comfort for chronically ill children. His gentle nature and calming presence make him more than just a therapy animal; he’s a friend to those who need him most.
A Lifetime of Care and Connection
Dalai’s journey began on Lexy’s farm in North Carolina, where he was raised alongside other llamas. Over the years, his kind and patient personality stood out. He never shied away from human interaction and seemed to instinctively know when someone needed comfort. As he aged, Lexy realized Dalai had a unique gift—bringing joy to children facing serious illnesses.
A Giant Teddy Bear in Llama Form
Despite being a full-grown llama, Dalai behaves more like a gentle giant. He stands still while children hug him, nuzzle into his thick fur, and whisper their secrets. His big, dark eyes exude warmth, and his slow, steady movements help ease anxiety. Whether he’s sitting beside a wheelchair or resting his head on a child’s lap, Dalai knows exactly how to provide comfort.

Animals like Dalai form deep connections with their caregivers, and his bond with Lexy is unbreakable. After nearly three decades together, Lexy understands his every glance, and Dalai trusts her completely. She ensures he stays healthy, loved, and ready to continue his important work.
