This cognitive capacity, which operates alongside their vocal intelligence, points to a bird that’s considerably more observant and adaptive than its drab appearance might initially suggest.

The oldest known gray catbird was at least 17 years and 11 months old when it was recaptured and rereleased during banding operations in New Jersey in 2001. It had been banded in Maryland in 1984. That’s an extraordinary run for a small bird navigating predators, migration, and North American winters.
Males with the most variety of sounds may be the most attractive to females because large repertoires demonstrate they have already survived many breeding seasons. A catbird old enough to have spent nearly 18 years building and refining its vocal library would have produced a song unlike any other.
