In the lush valleys of Long Dean, Cotswolds, the fields shimmer with vibrant green, a deceptive facade masking the pressing drought that threatens the very heartbeat of the farm. Despite the verdant appearance, the land cries out for rain, and the farmers, like Sarah Laughton, feel the weight of each dry day.
Hope Amidst Hardship
Among the challenges, a beacon of hope emerges in the form of Angus, the last calf born this season. Jet-black and long-legged, with stout North Devon knees, Angus embodies resilience. His birth was not without drama; his mother, injured during labor, couldn’t care for him. Sarah stepped in, bottle-feeding him and ensuring his survival. Now, Angus thrives, a testament to the unwavering dedication that farming demands.
A Silent Struggle
May’s greenery is misleading. While the landscape appears lush, the reality is starkly different. Since February, only 28mm of rain has fallen, with recent showers offering little relief. The grass has ceased growing, forcing early and poor-quality silage cuts. Fields, once abundant, now resemble the worn grounds of a tennis court after a grueling match.
From Pasture to Plate
The drought’s impact reverberates beyond the fields. With diminished forage, livestock face nutritional deficits, leading to reduced stocking densities. This scarcity could escalate beef prices, affecting consumers and the broader agricultural economy. The interconnectedness of farming systems means that a dry spring can have long-lasting repercussions.
Sharing Data and Despair
In the farming community, conversations are dominated by rainfall—or the lack thereof. Farmers exchange data like gossip: “Only 28mm since February,” “Just 17mm the other night and it mostly ran off.” These shared experiences foster solidarity but also underscore the collective anxiety gripping the region.
Navigating an Uncertain Future
Despite the challenges, farmers like Sarah adapt. They adjust feeding schedules, explore alternative forage options, and lean on community support. Angus’s survival story is a microcosm of this resilience—a reminder that, even in adversity, life persists.
