What started as just another day at the Wilderness Trails Zoo in Birch Run, Michigan, turned tense on May 1, 2025, during a regular morning enrichment session. A zookeeper was performing a common task—sprinkling fresh grass and catnip into the bobcat enclosure—when one of the animals unexpectedly scratched the keeper across the head and hand.
Zoo officials say the enrichment was part of the animals’ daily routine. Enrichment involves introducing scents, textures, or objects to encourage natural behaviors. But with wild animals, even familiar routines can become unpredictable.
The incident left the zookeeper with a 9-millimeter (0.35-inch) laceration to the head and multiple minor scratches. Thankfully, none of the injuries were life-threatening.
A Swift and Controlled Response
As soon as the scratch occurred, another carnivore keeper nearby jumped into action. They calmly followed safety protocols and exited the enclosure through a secure double-door safety corridor. This system prevents both animal escape and further risk to humans.
Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene. The injured zookeeper was treated with stitches for the head wound and bandages for the scratches on the hand. According to the zoo, the staff member is recovering comfortably and in good spirits.
The bobcat involved remained in the enclosure and was not harmed.
Behind the Fence: Working with Wild Instincts
While bobcats might look like oversized house cats, they’re anything but. These North American natives weigh up to 14 kilograms (30 pounds) and are equipped with sharp claws and teeth. Even in captivity, they retain wild instincts.
Zoo staff are specially trained to handle such animals, but no amount of training can eliminate all risk. One quick swipe or startled reaction is sometimes all it takes to cause an injury.
Zoo Director Karen Waller emphasized that the incident was “not the result of negligence—on the part of the keeper, the zoo, or the animal. It was simply a reminder that wild animals, no matter how well cared for, are still wild.”
Safety Procedures Under Review
While the zoo already follows strict protocols—including double-entry enclosures, safety observers, and daily animal behavior assessments—leadership confirmed they are reviewing the incident. So far, no procedural errors have been found.
The goal of the review is to identify whether additional safety measures could be added to prevent future occurrences, particularly during hands-on enrichment activities. Staff training is ongoing, and all keepers undergo frequent drills for emergency scenarios.
Public Safety Not at Risk
Despite the drama, the zoo remained open to the public during the incident. Officials assured visitors there was never any risk to guests, as the enclosure was fully secured at all times. Many visitors were unaware that anything had even happened until local news outlets reported on it later that day.
