Meteorologists noted the precipitation as a critical boost for parched soils. Isolated storms added some intensity to the day’s weather pattern.

Wednesday’s Sudden Shift to Wet Weather

Conditions turned rainy across the D.C. area early Wednesday, following a warm and windy previous day. Showers brought intermittent breaks during the afternoon, with a chance for fleeting sunshine before evening. High temperatures held in the 70s despite the clouds.

Winds from the southwest blew at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 25 to 30 mph at times. These breezy conditions persisted through the downpours. Overnight, skies stayed cloudy as scattered showers continued, pushing lows into the 50s.

Potential for Heavy Rain and Evening Storms

Isolated thunderstorms dotted the forecast, particularly during the Wednesday evening rush hour. Some neighborhoods faced risks of heavy downpours. 7News First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin highlighted this variability, stating, “Some neighborhoods may even see a few heavy downpours.”

Rudin described the rain as a much-needed blessing for the drought-stricken region. Precipitation offered relief where it had been scarce. Commuters prepared for slick roads and reduced visibility during peak hours.

Cooler Thursday with Lingering Moisture

Temperatures dropped Thursday morning under cloudy skies, with highs struggling to reach the lower 60s. Early showers remained possible before conditions improved. Winds shifted north at 5 to 10 mph, contributing to the chill.

Skies gradually cleared by afternoon, easing the gloom. The cooler air marked a stark contrast to earlier warmth. Residents bundled up for the noticeable dip.

Friday promised a brighter outlook, with mostly sunny skies and comfortable highs around 70 degrees. Low humidity enhanced the pleasant feel, while west winds stayed light at 5 to 15 mph. The day stood out as a respite from recent variability.

Mother’s Day weekend delivered warmth but retained uncertainty. Saturday featured highs in the 70s, morning clouds, and an afternoon chance for showers or isolated thunderstorms. Sunday began sunny, climbed to the 80s, then clouded over with evening shower risks.
