Daring Rescue in Tennessee Saves 94 Dogs and Puppies from Bitter Cold

Tennessee – Animal Rescue Corps teams conducted two urgent operations amid harsh winter weather, pulling nearly 94 dogs, including vulnerable puppies, from dire exposure to freezing temperatures.

Temperatures plunged to 11 degrees Fahrenheit when DeKalb County Animal Control alerted Animal Rescue Corps about dozens of dogs lacking proper shelter.[1][2]

Rescuers arrived to find 43 Pomskies – hybrids of Huskies and Pomeranians – confined in pens with minimal protection, such as barrels or flimsy lean-tos. Puppies huddled with their mother, Phoebe, in a small enclosure offering scant defense against the wind and ice. Even breeds accustomed to cold could not endure such prolonged exposure without adequate care. Negotiations with the owner stretched six hours in the biting chill, requiring law enforcement support to secure a full surrender.

Operation Winter Storm Fern Unfolds

The mission, named Operation Winter Storm Fern, demanded swift action during an ice storm. Teams loaded the shivering animals into transports for a four-hour journey to safety. No drinkable water had been available, heightening risks of hypothermia and frostbite, especially for the smaller puppies. Upon arrival at partner facilities, medical evaluations began immediately.

Phoebe and her four-week-old litter, including one named TK, found refuge with Fetching Tails. Tim Woodward, executive director of Animal Rescue Corps, described the scene: “Phoebe and her two little puppies were out in this weather in a small pen, very cold, with inadequate shelter.”[1]

Back-to-Back: Operation Broken Ties

Just weeks later, rescuers targeted a failed shelter in Arkansas, liberating 51 more dogs in Operation Broken Ties. These canines had endured years in barren cages, some for a decade. Among them was Gladys, a pregnant female who delivered nine healthy puppies under professional veterinary care shortly after rescue.

Woodward emphasized the relief: “Gladys… was pregnant at the time of her rescue. She later gave birth to nine puppies under the care of a veterinary team. The mother and her pups are ‘doing terrific.'”[1] Pre-spaying and neutering streamlined placements into foster homes, accelerating adoptions. The dogs proved remarkably friendly and eager for affection despite their hardships.

Challenges and Triumphs of Large-Scale Rescues

These operations highlighted the perils of extreme weather on neglected animals. Rescuers faced tense standoffs, logistical hurdles, and immediate health crises like parasites and malnutrition in some cases.[2]
