Violent storms sweeping across North India have left a trail of destruction, with Uttar Pradesh emerging as the worst-hit state after powerful dust storms, lightning strikes, torrential rain, and winds reportedly reaching nearly 130 kmph battered several districts this week. The disaster has already claimed more than 100 lives across the state, while dozens of others were injured as homes collapsed, trees were uprooted, and power infrastructure was ripped apart.
One terrifying incident from Bareilly district has now gone viral across social media, becoming the defining image of the storm’s fury. The video shows a man identified as 50-year-old Nanhe Ansari — also referred to in reports as Nanhe Miyan — being lifted high into the air while clinging to a tin shed during the violent storm on May 13. According to reports, the incident happened in Bareilly’s Bhamora area as Ansari tried to secure a temporary wedding structure from the powerful winds. Moments later, the entire metal roof was ripped away, carrying him dozens of feet into the air before he crashed into a nearby field.
Miraculously, he survived the ordeal with fractures to his arm and leg and is currently undergoing treatment. Eyewitness footage of the incident spread rapidly online, shocking millions and highlighting the terrifying intensity of the storm system.
Meteorologists say the deadly weather was triggered by a severe pre-monsoon thundersquall system fueled by the collision of hot dry air over North India with moisture-laden winds moving inland. The storms impacted multiple regions including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, parts of Himachal Pradesh, and surrounding northern states. Authorities in Uttar Pradesh have launched relief operations, while Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced compensation for families of those killed in the disaster
