In the coastal realms of New England, a dedicated team of rescuers is working tirelessly to save seals entangled in marine debris. These efforts not only protect individual animals but also highlight the broader environmental challenges facing marine life today.
A Seal’s Struggle and a Team’s Mission
On Block Island, Rhode Island, a young gray seal pup was spotted with fishing net constricting its neck—a life-threatening situation. The Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Team, in collaboration with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society and Block Island Maritime Institute, sprang into action. Using stealth and precision, they approached the resting seals, carefully isolating the entangled pup. With swift coordination, they secured the seal, removed the debris, conducted health checks, and released it back into the ocean.

This rescue is one of many. The team has reported twenty entangled gray seals so far this year, surpassing their annual average. Entanglements from fishing gear, plastic waste, and other debris pose significant risks to marine mammals, often leading to severe injuries or death.
