The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center issued its Day 1 outlook early Friday, designating an Enhanced Risk area covering over 104,000 square miles and affecting nearly 7.7 million people.[1] This zone stretched from parts of the southern and central Plains into western Arkansas, Missouri and southern Iowa.

Slight and Marginal risks expanded the threat zone further, encompassing more than 200,000 square miles under Slight Risk with 24.8 million residents and 236,000 square miles under Marginal Risk impacting 26.8 million others.[1] Cities such as Dallas, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Chicago and Milwaukee fell within these elevated categories.

Main Hazards from Thunderstorms

Very large hail emerged as the foremost concern, with supercells capable of producing hailstones up to hen-egg size or larger in eastern Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska.[3] Damaging wind gusts from bowing thunderstorm clusters or quasi-linear convective systems added to the dangers, particularly as storms organized overnight.

Tornado potential included a few strong twisters, especially during evening hours when low-level shear intensified.[1] Heavy rainfall raised flooding concerns in already saturated areas following prior storms.[3]

• Very large hail: Greatest odds at 30 percent in Enhanced zones.
• Damaging winds: 15 percent probability, with gusts exceeding 80 mph possible.
• Tornadoes: 10 percent chance, some potentially EF2 strength or higher.
• Flooding rain: Rounds of downpours trailing main storm line.

Core Regions in the Crosshairs

Eastern Oklahoma, eastern Kansas, southeast Nebraska and northern Kansas stood out for the highest severe potential, where supercells could thrive amid rich low-level moisture and strong wind shear. Storms threatened to spread east-southeastward into the Ozarks and southern Iowa by evening.

Broader impacts reached Texas cities like Dallas-Fort Worth, Tulsa, Omaha and St. Louis under Slight Risk, while Marginal zones included Chicago, Detroit and Shreveport.[1] This multi-day pattern followed severe weather earlier in the week, including large hail and flooding near Dallas.[2]

Storm Timeline and Development

Initiation occurred around mid-afternoon in southeast Nebraska and northern Kansas, with activity building through the evening along a surging cold front.[1] Forecasters noted uncertainty along the dryline in Oklahoma and Texas but expected better organization later as instability deepened.

Overnight, isolated severe storms lingered into early Saturday across Wisconsin, Illinois and lower Michigan, shifting focus to wind damage.

Officials urged those in affected areas to monitor local alerts closely, as rapid storm development demanded quick action.[2] Homes and vehicles faced particular vulnerability from hail and winds.
