In the serene heights of Big Bear Lake, California, a young bald eagle named Sunny has taken her first flight, marking a significant milestone in her journey to independence. Raised under the watchful eyes of her parents, Jackie and Shadow, Sunny’s inaugural flight has captivated thousands who have followed her growth through the Friends of Big Bear Valley’s live-streamed eagle cam.
A New Chapter Begins
On the morning of June 2, 2025, at 10:46 a.m., Sunny spread her wings and soared from the upper Y-branch of her nest into the open skies. This momentous event was shared by the Friends of Big Bear Valley, who noted, “She put up her wings to catch the wind and then jumped up and let those beautiful wings carry her.” Sunny’s sibling, Gizmo, observed the flight from the nest, highlighting the close bond between the two eaglets.
From Hatchling to Fledgling
Sunny and Gizmo hatched in early March 2025, part of a trio of eaglets born to Jackie and Shadow. Tragically, one sibling passed away mid-month, but the remaining two have thrived under their parents’ care. Over the past weeks, Sunny exhibited signs of readiness to fledge, including hovering above the nest and venturing onto nearby branches.
A Family Under the Spotlight
Jackie and Shadow, the resident bald eagle pair of Big Bear Lake, have been the subjects of public fascination since their nesting activities began streaming in 2015. Their nurturing behavior and the growth of their offspring have provided viewers with an intimate look into the lives of these majestic birds.
