Anyone who has watched a dog and a cat share a sofa knows how satisfying it is. Anyone who has watched the opposite, a dog fixated on a cat that wants nothing to do with it, knows how stressful it can be. Breed isn’t destiny, yet it does shape temperament, energy and instinct in ways that matter when a cat already lives in your home.
Some breeds were developed for gentle companionship or calm work alongside people. Others were built to chase, and that drive doesn’t always switch off at the front door. The dogs below tend to land on the friendlier side of that divide, though every dog is an individual.
Golden Retriever

Goldens have a reputation as easygoing, people-loving dogs, and that sociable streak often extends to other animals. They were bred to retrieve game gently, which means a soft mouth and a cooperative nature. Many settle in with a resident cat without much fuss.
Young goldens can be boisterous, though, and an exuberant puppy may overwhelm a shy cat. Teach calm greetings early and give the cat high perches to retreat to. With a little structure, this is one of the more reliable pairings.
Labrador Retriever

Labs share much of the golden’s friendly outlook. They’re typically eager to please, food motivated and responsive to training, which makes setting household rules easier. Plenty of families keep Labs and cats together happily for years.
Their main flaw is enthusiasm. A Lab that wants to play may bounce straight at a cat who’d rather be left alone, so supervise early meetings. Burn off energy with long walks first, and the introduction usually goes better.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavaliers are small, affectionate dogs that seem happiest when they’re near someone, human or otherwise. They were bred as lap companions rather than hunters, so strong chase instincts aren’t a typical trait. That makes them a natural fit for many cat households.
Their gentle size is also a plus, since they’re less likely to bowl over a cat by accident. Expect a dog that wants to be a part of everything, including your cat’s nap routine. Some cats find that clinginess a bit much, so let your cat set the pace.
Bichon Frise

The Bichon is cheerful, social and generally good natured. Bred as a companion dog, it tends to be more interested in play and attention than in pursuit. Many get along nicely with cats when introduced patiently.
They do need regular grooming and company, and a bored Bichon can get yappy. A cat that enjoys a lively housemate may actually warm up to this little dog. Slow introductions help keep things friendly.
Basset Hound

Bassets are laid back to the point of comedy. They were bred to follow scent trails at a steady pace, not to sprint after fast moving targets, and their relaxed manner often suits cats well. Many are happy to coexist with a cat and little else.
Still, a hound’s nose is strong, and it may get interested in cat food or the litter box. Keep both out of reach. Otherwise, this is a mellow roommate that rarely pushes the issue.
Pug

Pugs are companion dogs through and through. They’re typically affable, a bit goofy and more interested in snacks and snuggles than in chasing anything. Plenty of owners report peaceful households with cats in the mix.
Their flat faces limit stamina and heat tolerance, so they’re usually not rushing around at high speed anyway. That calm pace can reassure nervous cats. Keep play gentle and avoid overexertion.

Newfoundlands are famously gentle giants, patient and sweet with family. Their size can be a concern, but their temperament is usually soft and careful. Many are tolerant of smaller pets in the home.
The practical issue is bulk. A big dog can knock over a cat without meaning to, and drool and shedding are part of the deal. Give your cat vertical escape routes and you’ll likely be fine.
Papillon

Papillons are small, bright and surprisingly sturdy. They’re often friendly and adaptable, and their lightweight frame means they can keep up with a playful cat without being threatening. Some even enjoy chasing games that the cat joins willingly.
They’re clever, which helps with training but also means they can get bossy. Teach manners early so they don’t herd or pester a cat. A well mannered Papillon can be a delightful companion for a confident feline.

Boxers are playful, loyal and often described as clownish. With early socialization, many learn to live peacefully with cats, especially when raised with them. They tend to be affectionate with their households.
Their strength and bounce are the catch. A Boxer that doesn’t know its own power can frighten a cat, so training and supervision matter. Once they’re settled, though, plenty form real bonds with feline housemates.

Poodle

Poodles rank among the smartest dogs, and that intelligence helps them learn the rules of a mixed species home. Standard, miniature and toy sizes all exist, so you can match the dog to your cat’s comfort level. Many do well with cats when trained consistently.
They need mental stimulation, or they’ll invent their own entertainment, and cats can become the target. Puzzle toys, training sessions and regular exercise help. A busy Poodle is usually a polite one.
Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus were bred to be companions, and it shows. They’re generally friendly, relaxed and happy to share space, which makes them a common choice for homes with cats. Chasing isn’t a typical priority for them.
Their small size and mellow nature can suit cats that dislike rough play. Like any dog, they should be introduced gradually. Many end up curled up near the cat within weeks.
Greyhound, Surprisingly Maybe

This one comes with a caveat. Greyhounds are fast sight hunters, so some have a strong chase drive. Yet many are quiet, gentle indoors, and rescue groups often test individual dogs for cat compatibility.
If you’re considering a retired racer, ask the adoption group whether the dog has been cat tested. Some live happily with cats, while others can’t. It’s a good reminder that the individual dog often matters more than the label.

Final Thoughts

My view is that breed lists are a decent starting point and a poor finishing line. A calm, well socialized mutt can beat a so called cat friendly purebred every time, and a good introduction process matters more than any pedigree.
If you’re choosing a dog for a cat household, meet the specific animal, ideally around cats, and ask honest questions. Give your cat safe spaces, go slowly and expect weeks, not minutes. Do that, and most pairings have a fair shot at peace.
