Opossums look like they belong in a swamp, not a snowy backyard. They have a hairless tail, thin ears and a face that seems built for warm nights. Yet people in places with real winters keep finding them at the bird feeder, under the porch or crossing the road at dusk.
So how did a tropical animal end up so far from home? The short answer involves climate, but it isn’t only about climate, and the story changes a bit from state to state. Here are seven states where the opossum’s northward push is worth watching, and what the evidence says about each.
New York: Opossums at the Edge of the Adirondacks

New York is one of the clearest examples of the trend. Opossums are becoming more common in the North Country as they expand their range north and west. One naturalist there described seeing them only recently in and around the Adirondacks, including one that visited a bird feeder at night in the middle of winter.
Warmer winters are one suspected reason, though not the only one. Opossums live well around people because there’s more food and shelter. That mix of mild weather and easy meals seems to matter a lot.
Pennsylvania: A Long Settled Neighbor Still Spreading

Pennsylvania’s opossums aren’t newcomers. The state’s Game Commission notes that they’re found throughout Pennsylvania, where they’re classified as a furbearer. The same agency says the species has expanded its range north and west during the past century.
Winter is still a real test here. Opossums don’t hibernate, but may den up during cold or snowy periods, and their fur is poor insulation. Pennsylvania shows how the animal copes at the edge of its comfort zone, mostly by staying put when the weather turns ugly.
Michigan: Common in the South, Pushing Higher

Michigan has a documented history. Researchers note that opossums became common in southern Michigan by the 1920s and are now found as far north as southeastern Ontario. That gives scientists a rare chance to study a range expansion that’s actually been recorded over time.
Genetic work has looked at opossums in Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. It identified two genetically distinct populations, one west of Lake Michigan and one east of it. In other words, the animals didn’t all arrive by one path, which makes the spread a little more complicated than a simple march north.

Wisconsin sits on the western side of that genetic split. It’s a useful reminder that opossums have expanded along more than one front. The same research examined whether climate records, census data and genetic diversity lined up, and the lead researcher cautioned that climate change alone might not be the entire story for the opossum.
That caution is worth keeping in mind. Human changes to the landscape, from cleared forests to suburbs, have also helped. Wisconsin’s winters can still be harsh, so numbers can swing from year to year.
Minnesota: Breeding Where Winter Bites

Minnesota is toward the northern edge of what seems plausible. One summary of range data says Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan now support stable breeding populations despite winter temperatures that challenge opossum survival. That source is a secondary one, so treat it as a general picture rather than a precise count.
The same source warns that northern populations can crash after severe winters. That fits what biologists have long said about cold being the main brake on the species. A mild stretch lets numbers grow, and a brutal one can knock them back.
Illinois: Where Opossums Rarely See Their Third Birthday

Illinois shows the cost of living at the cold margin. A local wildlife group notes that opossums often get frostbite and rarely live past three years, but they adapt by rotating between several homes, scavenging during the day and using leaves for insulation. Short lives don’t stop them from being common.
The same group says they’re now common in Illinois and even farther north. The lesson is that an animal doesn’t need an easy life to expand. It only needs enough survivors, and enough babies, to keep going.

North Dakota: The Far Edge of the Map

North Dakota is the long shot. A Futurity report on opossum research mentions that the species has been documented expanding northward, including one unlucky opossum in particular. I’d treat North Dakota as a frontier sighting rather than proof of a settled population.
Scientists studying the spread said very little is preventing continued dispersal northward, provided the animals can survive winters. That last clause is doing the heavy lifting. Milder winters improve the odds, but they don’t remove the risk.

Final Thoughts

My view is that milder winters get too much of the credit. They help, and there’s good reasoning behind it: as northern winters warm, more days are suitable for foraging, so opossums farther north can keep their energy balance through winter. Yet garbage cans, bird feeders and compost piles have also served as reliable stops along the way.
That means the opossum’s spread is partly our doing, twice over. We’ve warmed the winters and we’ve set out the buffet. If you’d rather not host one, secure the trash and bring pet food inside, and remember these animals are useful scavengers that eat ticks and insects. They’re also a decent early signal of how fast a landscape is changing.
