When Ed, a pet zebra, arrived at his new home in Christiana, Tennessee, he escaped within 24 hours—on May 31, 2025, racing through woods, roads, and suburbs. Over the next week, he became a local legend, spotted trotting along Interstate 24 and in neighbourhoods, prompting highway closures.
A Viral Sensation
Ed’s bold wanderings quickly went viral. Social media shared clips and memes of him “dining” at Waffle House or “panhandling” by roads. The zebra’s free-roaming adventure captivated the public and dominated timelines.
Tracking Ed with Precision
Authorities closed roads to protect Ed and drivers. He slipped into wooded areas multiple times, eluding capture—but was eventually spotted grazing in a pasture near Buchanan Estates, discovered by a drone from the sheriff’s office.
A Helicopter Rescue
With crowds gathering and Ed spooked, officials elevated their approach: veterinary and aviation crews encircled him in a net and airlifted him via helicopter to a waiting animal trailer. The extraordinary aerial rescue unfolded on June 8, returning him safely.

As a legally owned pet—zebras are Class III exotic animals in Tennessee—Ed’s escape underlined the unpredictability of exotic animal ownership. Experts caution zebras are wild and best kept in suitable enclosures. Ed is now back home with his owner, safe and thankfully unharmed.
