Tiny Dog Saves a Hiker Trapped in a Glacier

On July 3, a hiker and his small long‑haired Chihuahua set out on the Fee Glacier near Saas‑Fee in the Swiss Alps. During the trek, the man broke through a snow bridge and plunged into an eight‑metre (≈26‑foot) crevasse. Despite being injured and buried in the icy depths, he managed to radio for help with a walkie‑talkie—but without clear landmarks, rescuers could not locate him.

Meanwhile, the Chihuahua stayed perched beside the crevasse opening, barking and pacing. Its urgent behavior caught the attention of an Air Zermatt rescue specialist aboard a helicopter. Watching the tiny dog’s movement on a rock provided the precise clue needed to target the rescue operation.

With the dog as their guide, rescuers located the narrow crevasse. A rescue specialist abseiled down into the glacier and pulled the hiker to safety. Both the man and his loyal Chihuahua were then airlifted to a hospital in Visp for medical evaluation.

Air Zermatt lauded the Chihuahua as a “four‑legged hero,” acknowledging that without the dog’s decisive role, the rescue may have failed. The rescue service emphasized that the pup’s unwavering presence likely saved his owner’s life snowbrains.com+7theguardian.com+7apnews.com+7.

This incident highlights the hidden dangers of glaciers, especially unstable snow bridges. Air Zermatt had previously warned of increased crevasse rescues earlier in the season and stressed the importance of caution when traversing glaciated terrain.

Small Dog, Big Impact

Traditionally, mountain rescues in the Alps have been associated with large breeds like St. Bernards. But this tiny Chihuahua proved that heroism doesn’t depend on size. With modern air rescue methods replacing classic dog‑sledging teams, this little pup showed that vigilance and loyalty can make a life‑saving difference in the high Alps.
