These figures highlighted the storm’s ferocity, with at least 39 sites surpassing 30 inches and more than 20 meeting official blizzard criteria of heavy snow and sustained high winds.[5]

Travel Bans Halt Region, Flights Grounded

Officials imposed sweeping measures to protect residents. New York City enacted a full travel ban from Sunday evening until noon Monday, shutting streets, highways, and bridges except for emergencies. Similar restrictions gripped Rhode Island statewide, New Jersey, and Massachusetts’ south coast, where nonessential vehicles faced bans and fines.[1]

Airports bore the chaos, with over 5,600 U.S. flights canceled Monday alone and thousands more the next day. John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark saw the heaviest disruptions, stranding passengers amid ripple effects nationwide. Public transit faltered too: New Jersey Transit suspended service, New York subways delayed, and DoorDash halted deliveries in the city.[3]

Wet, heavy “heart-attack snow” weighed down lines, complicating restorations expected to last days in hard-hit Cape Cod.[5] At least two deaths occurred in Maryland when a tree fell on a road, injuring another critically; one fatality in New York remained under investigation.

Governors in seven states declared emergencies, activating National Guard units. New York Governor Kathy Hochul warned of outages in Long Island and the city, calling it unseen in years. Rhode Island’s Dan McKee urged residents home, deeming it the biggest storm ever recorded there.[1] New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani praised workers clearing streets, noting the city returned to operations Tuesday.
