Blizzard Condition Cripples the Northeast as Powerful Nor’easter Unleashes Heavy Snow

The East Coast endured a ferocious winter assault as a powerful Nor’easter intensified rapidly Sunday night into Monday, blanketing cities from Baltimore to Boston under blizzard conditions and deep snow accumulation.[1][2]

Storm Rapidly Strengthens into Bomb Cyclone

The system, unofficially named Winter Storm Hernando by The Weather Channel, underwent explosive development off the Mid-Atlantic coast.[2] Forecasters tracked its path from the Ohio Valley through the Northeast megalopolis, where it produced snowfall rates of 2 to 4 inches per hour in peak bands.[3] Winds escalated quickly, with gusts reaching hurricane force in coastal areas.

Blizzard warnings stretched over 600 miles from Maryland to Maine, affecting 41 million people.[4] The National Weather Service defined the event by sustained winds over 35 mph and visibilities below a quarter-mile for several hours, conditions that materialized across New Jersey, New York City, and southern New England.[4] This marked the first such alert for New York City since 2017 and for all of New Jersey since 1996.[2]

Snow Totals Hammer Major Cities

Accumulations piled up swiftly, with some spots nearing 2 feet by Monday morning. New York City’s Central Park recorded 15.1 inches, while nearby LaGuardia and JFK airports saw similar depths.[3] Long Island locations like Islip reported 22.5 to 26.5 inches, and Freehold Township in New Jersey measured 24.2 inches.[3][2]

The heaviest snow targeted southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, where forecasts called for 20 inches or more. Baltimore areas received lighter but still disruptive 3 to 8 inches.[2] Thundersnow added to the spectacle in the Northeast corridor.

Travel Chaos and States of Emergency

Authorities imposed sweeping travel restrictions to curb dangers. New York City enacted a citywide ban on non-essential vehicles starting Sunday evening, extended through midday Monday.[4] New Jersey followed with a statewide advisory until noon, while Pennsylvania and Delaware limited heavy trucks on interstates.[2]

Air travel ground to a halt, with over 8,000 flights canceled nationwide and thousands more delayed, primarily at JFK, LaGuardia, and Boston Logan.[2] Rail services like NJ Transit suspended operations, and schools across the region closed, shifting to virtual learning where possible. States including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island declared emergencies, deploying National Guard troops for response.[2]

Power Outages and Lingering Threats

More than 600,000 customers lost power, concentrated in New Jersey and Massachusetts.[2] Gusts topped 98 mph at Wellfleet, Massachusetts, toppling trees and damaging structures.[2] Two fatalities occurred in Maryland when a tree struck a vehicle.[2]

Coastal flooding threatened shorelines from the Jersey Shore to Massachusetts, compounded by heavy, wet snow dubbed “heart-attack snow” for shoveling risks.[3] Warming centers opened amid sub-freezing temperatures.
