Deadly Tornadoes Wreak Havoc Across Southwest Michigan During Fierce Storm

Southwest Michigan – A barrage of powerful tornadoes struck the region Friday, killing at least four people and injuring more than a dozen others while damaging homes and infrastructure amid a broader severe weather outbreak in the central United States.[1][2]

Three people died in Branch County after a tornado hammered the Union Lake area west of Union City, authorities reported. The storm leveled homes, uprooted trees, and left neighborhoods in ruins, with debris draped over power lines.[1]

Twelve individuals suffered injuries in the same zone, three of whom required hospitalization. The Branch County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences, stating their thoughts remained with those who lost family, friends, and property. Jennifer Nagel, Union City’s assistant village manager, described the scene as one where the severe weather “wreaked havoc” and proved “completely devastating.”[3]

Cass County Joins the Toll of Destruction

One additional fatality occurred in Cass County near Edwardsburg, close to the Indiana border, where Sheriff Clint Roach confirmed the death alongside several injuries. Multiple large structures, including homes and pole barns, sustained major damage or total destruction.[4]

Cass County Emergency Manager Manny DeLaRosa detailed the extent of the wreckage from the tornado touchdown. Witnesses captured video of roofs peeling off buildings and homes reduced to rubble in the affected paths.[1]

Scenes of Chaos in Three Rivers and Beyond

In Three Rivers, another tornado ripped the roof from a Menards home improvement store, shredded a storage unit, and wrecked a Dollar Tree location. Trees toppled across roads, and a car lifted in a strip mall parking lot along US-131.[2]

Power outages plunged more than 5,500 customers into darkness, with over 2,200 affected in Union City alone. The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Union City saw partial damage, though its nearly 150-year-old grand piano escaped harm. Road closures and communication disruptions compounded the challenges for first responders.[1]

State Response and Meteorological Insights

Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated Michigan’s Emergency Operations Center to orchestrate relief efforts across the southwest counties. The National Weather Service confirmed at least one tornado near Union City, noting such events remain relatively rare in the state, which averages about 15 annually.[2]

Meteorologist David Roth attributed the outbreak to a weather system drawing Gulf moisture northward along a warm front. Storms extended risks to Oklahoma and other central U.S. areas, underscoring the multi-state threat.[1]

Officials urged residents to avoid damaged zones and prepare for possible additional thunderstorms.
