Some bonds are forged through fate. That’s the story of Steve and Riggs, a rescued wolf who found love and trust in the unlikeliest place. Their connection defies convention, blending human compassion and wolf loyalty. Here’s the tale of how a frightened, misunderstood creature became family to the man who saved his life.
The Wolf Who Didn’t Belong
Riggs was born in captivity, far from the wild his ancestors once roamed. When he escaped his owner, he wandered 50 miles, surviving on scraps from dumpsters and backyard dog food. Without survival skills passed down by wild wolves, Riggs struggled. Found in a yard and confiscated by animal control, his time was running out.

Steve and his team at Apex Protection Project heard Riggs’ story. They knew they had to act fast. With only 48 hours before euthanasia, they drove 19 hours to rescue him. Initially mistaken for a low-content wolfdog, Riggs proved to be a full wolf with a skittish yet curious personality. His rescue marked the start of a remarkable journey.
From Fearful to Playful
Adjusting to his new life wasn’t easy for Riggs. He was wary of his surroundings but quickly bonded with Steve. Wolves are naturally shy around men, but Riggs broke the mold. He found comfort in Steve’s presence, treating him like a pack member. Over time, Riggs’ playful, mischievous nature began to shine, earning him a reputation as a lovable troublemaker.
A Connection Like No Other
Steve and Riggs share a bond that feels more familial than animal-human. Riggs nibbles Steve’s hand gently, a gesture wolves use to show affection. He doesn’t stay for treats; he stays because of trust. Riggs listens to full sentences, proving wolves’ intelligence. Their connection is mutual, built on love, respect, and an understanding of each other’s worlds.
Lessons From the Wolf
Native American teachings call the wolf a teacher, and Riggs embodies that wisdom. His loyalty and care mirror values humans often forget. Steve sees Riggs not as a beast but as a soul with his own way of loving. Together, they show that the gap between humans and wolves isn’t as wide as it seems.
Love That Defies Expectations
Riggs and Steve’s story isn’t just about a rescue; it’s about finding kinship in unexpected places. Through trust and love, a wolf found his home, and a man found a teacher. Their bond reminds us to look beyond labels, to nurture the connections we share. In the end, Riggs and Steve are proof that love knows no boundaries.
