It was a quiet morning when 11 abandoned puppies arrived at Great Plains SPCA. A passerby found them huddled in a crate, left at a busy intersection in Shawnee, Kansas. Without food or water, they were in danger. The shelter took them in, but space was limited, and their safety was uncertain.
The Immediate Danger

The puppies had been left out in the open, exposed to the elements. Heavy rain was approaching, and they had no shelter. The Good Samaritan who found them acted quickly, bringing them to the SPCA. There was little time to lose, and the staff knew they needed a safe place for the young dogs.
Concerns at the Shelter

With sick animals already at the shelter, staff had concerns about bringing in the vulnerable puppies. Parvovirus was a risk, and there were no quarantine spaces available. The puppies were placed in a shared kennel far from other animals, but this was only a temporary solution. They needed foster homes, and fast.
A Call for Help

The shelter posted an urgent plea for fosters on social media. The puppies, exhausted and scared, slept together while the shelter waited for a response. Within hours, six of the puppies had foster homes, but five were left behind. These five continued to wait, eagerly watching visitors, hoping to find a home.

By the next day, all 11 puppies had foster homes. The remaining five had finally been chosen, thanks to the outpouring of support from the community. Now, they could rest and grow strong. The staff at the SPCA breathed a sigh of relief, knowing the puppies were safe and cared for in loving homes.
A Bright Future Ahead

The puppies will stay in foster care until they are ready for adoption. They play, nap, and grow together, learning what it means to feel safe. Though their start was difficult, the puppies now have a chance at happy, full lives. The shelter is grateful to the community for stepping up when the puppies needed them most.
