When Moo Deng was born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand, no one expected her to become an internet sensation. Just one day old and already waddling into people’s hearts, Moo Deng’s unique looks and gentle nature made her unforgettable. Her bond with her caretaker, however, is what truly makes her story special.
A Sweet Nickname for a Round Little Girl
Moo Deng means “red pork” in Thai—a name lovingly given because of her plump shape and pinkish hue. Her keepers instantly adored her, and one in particular took her under his wing. He began raising her closely, feeding her by hand and creating a space where she felt safe and loved. From the start, their connection was clear.
A Baby Hippo With a Puppy’s Personality
Though she’s a hippo, Moo Deng acts more like a cuddly puppy. She follows her caretaker everywhere, demanding snuggles and snacks. Whether it’s lounging beside him or gently nudging his leg, Moo Deng makes it clear—she’s not just an animal in a zoo, she’s someone’s shadow. Their closeness has grown deeper with every day spent together.
The Viral Star of Thailand
Moo Deng’s videos began going viral shortly after her birth. Audiences couldn’t get enough of her munching on watermelon, relaxing in a bubble bath, or flopping down for a belly rub. But what viewers noticed most was the way she interacted with her caregiver—with complete trust and affection, like a best friend in hippo form.
A Hippo Raised With Love
Born in captivity, Moo Deng will never live in the wild. She’s grown up with humans, which means she doesn’t fear them—and wouldn’t survive on her own. But thanks to her zookeeper, she lives a full life. She has a rich habitat, daily enrichment, and most importantly, companionship. Her life may be different, but it’s not lacking in love.
Forever a Team of Two
On her first birthday, Moo Deng was showered with fruit, veggies, and worldwide wishes. But the biggest gift of all has always been her bond with the man who raised her. To Moo Deng, he’s not just a caretaker—he’s family. Their relationship is a reminder that love knows no species. From her first steps to her first birthday, Moo Deng has had one constant: her best friend by her side.
