In Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, paleontologists have unveiled an extraordinary find: the fossil of a new genus and species of dinosaur named Lishulong wangi. Unearthed from the Lower Jurassic Lufeng Formation, this discovery offers critical insights into early dinosaur evolution and highlights China’s role as a hotspot for prehistoric life.

The skull of Lishulong wangi measures an impressive 40 centimeters in length, making it the largest cranial material ever discovered in the Lufeng Formation. Previously, the title was held by Jingshanosaurus, with a skull length of 35 centimeters. This unique size sets Lishulong apart and adds to the region’s growing diversity of Early Jurassic sauropodomorphs.

A Collaborative Effort to Unearth the Past

The discovery was the result of years of dedicated work by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Bureau of Natural Resources of Lufeng County. The fossil was first uncovered in 2007 during a scientific survey in Dalishu village and displayed in the Lufeng World Dinosaur Valley museum after repairs.

While the fossil’s skull and nine cervical vertebrae were remarkably well-preserved, heavy rain eroded much of the posterior skeleton during excavation. Despite this, scientists successfully reconstructed the skull, with both lateral sides remaining intact, allowing detailed analysis of its morphology.

Key Features of Lishulong wangi

The skull of Lishulong wangi reveals significant characteristics, including thin, vertically supportive bones and a low, elongated structure. Some parts of the skull, like the postorbital and jugal bones, were displaced or missing, yet the overall structure provides valuable data for understanding its evolutionary lineage.

Through morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analysis, scientists confirmed that Lishulong wangi represents a previously unknown genus. It is classified as an early-diverging member of the Sauropodiformes and is closely related to Yunnanosaurus, another notable dinosaur from the same formation.

A Dinosaur of Impressive Size

Despite incomplete fossil remains, researchers estimate that Lishulong wangi measured around 8 meters in length during its lifetime. Its size and physical maturity further emphasize its importance within the Early Jurassic sauropodomorph group.

Yunnan: A Jurassic Treasure Trove

The Lufeng Formation continues to be a treasure trove for paleontologists. To date, six genera and eight species of Early Jurassic sauropodomorphs have been identified in this region. The discovery of Lishulong wangi enriches this legacy and expands our understanding of sauropodomorph diversity during this era.
