Dogs are especially known for having fierce maternal instincts, and Dobermans are no different. No threat is too small, as seen in this video of a Doberman mom protecting her puppies from their own dad.

Getting To Know the Doberman Breed

Dobermans are famous for their strength, speed, and endurance. These traits have made them iconic guard dogs and contributed to their somewhat unfair reputation as aggressive.

Likewise, they tend to develop a deep devotion to their owners, which can sometimes manifest as a protective nature.

The Iconic Doberman Look

Dobermans are fairly large dogs and tend to have very muscular and sleek bodies.

On average, they stand between 24 to 28 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 60 to 100 pounds. Their wedge-shaped head, alert eyes, and erect ears go hand in hand with their image as excellent guard dogs.

Do Dogs Have Paternal Instincts?

Unlike many mammalian species, paternal instincts are not very pronounced in dogs. Male dogs do not generally participate in the rearing of their young and their curiosity about puppies is often mistaken for paternal interest.

Typically, they tend to look at puppies as “immature” and “incompetent” pack members, which is why they treat them differently.

This clip shows a Doberman mother with a litter of (absolutely adorable) pups. She’s fiercely protecting her precious puppers from their dad.

Although the dad probably only means well and is acting out of curiosity, the mom won’t take a chance. This is a classic display of the powerful maternal instincts seen in dogs.

Other than these puppies’ overbearing cuteness what’s mostly highlighted in this video is the amazing instinctual maternal instincts seen in all mother dogs, no matter what breed.
