The Disappearance of Butters:

Twelve years ago, Butters, a beloved cat, slipped away from his home in San Diego, California, and never returned. Angelo and Shelley Castellino searched tirelessly, but as the days turned into months and years, they reluctantly gave up on finding their furry family member.

We had a dog door, and Butters was the first one to figure out how to go in and out,” Angelo recalls, reminiscing about the days when Butters was part of their everyday life.

The Unexpected Reunion:

Butters’ disappearance left a void in their hearts, but fate had other plans. In a twist of luck that no one saw coming, the couple received a life-changing call – Butters was alive!

Their missing cat, it turned out, had found his way to the desert town of Blythe, California, more than 200 miles away from his San Diego home. Even more remarkably, Butters had wandered into the yard of an animal services officer.

The Role of Microchips:

The key to this incredible reunion was the tiny microchip that Butters had implanted. The vigilant animal services officer immediately scanned him, revealing the vital information to reunite Butters with his long-lost family.

“Luckily, that owner even, 10, 12, years later had updated information,” said Alison Chavez, the Riverside County Animal Shelter’s animal services supervisor, highlighting the importance of keeping microchip information current.

An Emotional Reunion:

When the Castellanos received the call that their beloved cat, Butters, had been found, their emotions ran high. “The gentleman said, ‘I have your cat Butters,’ and Angelo was like, ‘really Butters,” Shelley recalls. It was a moment of joy and disbelief that no words could describe.

A Cross-Country Journey:

Angelo and Shelley had since relocated to Seattle, a considerable distance from Blythe, California. But, the love for their long-lost feline family member was strong enough to overcome any distance.

Recognizing the significance of this reunion, Animal Services volunteered to fly Butters to his new home in Seattle. It was a heartwarming gesture that brought Butters back to the family who had missed him for over a decade.
