In a remarkable twist of nature, a male baboon in South Africa’s Kruger National Park recently exhibited an extraordinary display of compassion. The scene unfolded recently, leaving seasoned safari operator Kurt Schultz astounded. One of the male baboons has been spotted carrying lion cub as if it was one of its own.

The Unexpected Bond

For two decades, Schultz had witnessed the wild and unpredictable behavior of animals. This encounter was unlike anything he’d ever seen. Baboons are usually very clean animals and normally groom themselves in a systematic manner.

The baboon climbed from one branch to the other, gently adorning the now tired lion cub. Its signs of dehydration clearly suggested it had been straying from the den it was probably born in. He came a rather long distance from the mother lion, all this in scorching weather in African savanna.

A Troop’s Discovery

Amphibious, Schultz assumed that the lion cub must have crossed the troop of baboons’ way. This was taken in an area where lions and leopards roamed the ground on constant lookout for their prey.

Lions would leave behind their cubs to feed alone while the mothers looked for food or while leopards went out hunting during the evening. While the cartoon character Rafiki, the wise baboon from the movie “The Lion King,” was depicted as one who seemed to care for the animals in the jungle.

It was a sufficient number to chase the lion’s mate away from the troop and Schultz even reported cases of baboon killing lion cubs. This makes nice illustrations of the severity of the wild nature.

Our Thoughts

When the sun slid beneath the savanna this day, the action taken by the animal, which seemed so very against its nature. This raised deep questions in many about the relationship between life and malevolence.

The young lion cub lay down, wondering whether he would ever wake up to the savanna again. In this one moment, the existence of nature showed us something that we might have never imagined – the gentle side of a baboon. The story showcases a predator and a guardian are one and the same.
