When the Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) received reports of a severely injured puppy, they couldn’t anticipate the profound impact this case would have on the community. Gideon, a young Jack Russell Terrier, was found with third-degree burns covering much of his tiny body, leading to an outpouring of support and a fervent quest for justice across Metro Detroit.

On January 12, 2025, DAWG responded to distressing reports of a puppy who had suffered intentional burns in a bathtub. Upon arrival, they found Gideon, then just three months old, in excruciating pain. Kelly LaBonty, DAWG’s Director, remarked, “I’ve never been—13 years of rescue, in 20 years of anesthesia—seen any living being in so much pain.” Gideon’s relentless cries underscored the severity of his injuries and the urgency of his need for care.

Gideon’s plight resonated deeply, not only within the local community but also globally. Support poured in from as far as the UK, Australia, and Africa, with well-wishers sending messages, donations, and supplies to aid in his recovery. DAWG maintained a map tracking the widespread support, showcasing the extensive reach of Gideon’s story.

Now under the care of a dedicated foster family in Lake Orion, Gideon has shown remarkable resilience. His nails have begun to regrow, and his skin is gradually healing. However, the emotional scars remain evident, as he occasionally wakes from nightmares, a testament to the trauma he endured. LaBonty noted, “It’s gonna be a long road for this pup. It’s going to affect him the rest of his life.” Some areas may never fully regrow hair due to the depth of the burns.

While Gideon’s physical healing progresses, the quest for justice remains a priority. LaBonty and DAWG have been relentless in their efforts, compiling extensive documentation and reaching out to various authorities, including the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Despite these efforts, progress has been slow. LaBonty expressed her frustration, stating, “There is no justice, and our system has failed him.” Both the police and prosecutor’s office have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with an animal cruelty detective assigned to the case.
