When Eve was first sighted in North California on Christmas Eve in 2017, she was a peculiar sight to many flabbergasted at what the hairless creature might be. Rescuers called in found her rummaging through a dumpster. Weighing just 30 pounds, this young American black bear cub was suffering from one of the most severe cases of mange experts had ever seen, leaving her almost entirely bald. They took her in and because of the poignant timing, named her Eve.
A Fight for Survival

Eve was promptly taken to the Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona, California, where she began an arduous recovery process. Her treatment included medicated baths and a nutritious diet to combat the mange and address her malnourishment. Despite the dedicated care, her fur regrowth was minimal, and she remained dependent on human assistance, making a return to the wild unfeasible.
A New Home in Texas

In December 2019, Eve found a permanent sanctuary at the Cleveland Armory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. This 1,400-acre haven, operated by the Humane Society of the United States, became her new home. Here, Eve began to thrive, exploring her surroundings, climbing trees, and even splashing in her pool. Her caregivers noted her feisty and inquisitive nature, celebrating her resilience and adaptability.
A Remarkable Transformation

Over the years, Eve’s health improved significantly. She gained weight, reaching a healthy 160 pounds, and most notably, much of her fur grew back, transforming her appearance from the “bare bear” to a beautiful black bear. This physical transformation mirrored her emotional and behavioral growth, as she began to exhibit natural wild behaviors and interact more confidently with her environment.
A Life of Comfort and Care

At Black Beauty Ranch, Eve enjoys a life tailored to her unique needs. According to vets, her hair will never fully grow back which is why she requires constant care. Her habitat includes wooded areas for exploration, trees for climbing, and a pool for cooling off. The sanctuary’s staff ensures she receives the best care, providing enrichment activities that stimulate her natural instincts and keep her engaged. Her story has become an inspiration, highlighting the impact of dedicated wildlife rehabilitation efforts.
An Ongoing Commitment

Caring for Eve is a significant commitment, with annual costs estimated at $15,000. The Humane Society of the United States and the Fund for Animals continue to support her needs through donations and public support. Eve’s journey underscores the importance of wildlife conservation and the profound difference that compassion and dedication can make in the lives of animals in need.
A Symbol of Hope

Eve’s transformation from a vulnerable, hairless cub to a thriving, furry bear serves as a powerful testament to resilience and the impact of human kindness. Her story continues to inspire many, reminding us of the importance of protecting and caring for our wildlife. As she roams her sanctuary, Eve embodies hope and the incredible possibilities that arise when we extend a helping hand to those in need.
