When a black bear in Michigan was spotted with a plastic lid stuck around its neck, locals knew it had been living this way for years. But this June, after countless sightings and close calls, a determined team finally freed the bear—ending a long, painful chapter in the animal’s life and starting a new one filled with relief and hope.
A Bear Everyone Knew
In northern Michigan, residents had grown familiar with the sight of a black bear with a plastic lid around its neck. The animal was often seen on trail cameras, wandering forests and crossing roads—but always with the same painful burden. No one knew exactly how the lid got there, but everyone hoped it would one day come off.
A Rescue Years in the Making
Wildlife officials and local volunteers tried for years to help the bear, but the animal proved elusive. It managed to evade traps, tranquilizer efforts, and even drone-assisted searches. Still, the community never gave up, keeping tabs on the bear and sharing updates whenever it appeared.
The Breakthrough Moment
This June, everything finally came together. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources received a call that the bear had been spotted again. A swift, coordinated effort followed—this time with success. The bear was safely tranquilized and the team rushed in to remove the lid, which had become embedded in its skin.
Wounds and Relief
The plastic lid had caused a deep wound in the bear’s neck over time, but miraculously, the injury wasn’t life-threatening. Once the lid was removed, the bear was treated with antibiotics and monitored while it recovered from sedation. Wildlife officials noted that despite its ordeal, the bear was otherwise healthy and strong.
Back to the Wild
After the lid was removed and the bear was checked over, it was released back into the wild. For the first time in years, the animal was able to move freely without the painful ring around its neck. Locals who had watched its struggle felt a collective sense of relief and joy, knowing the bear finally had a second chance.

The bear’s journey—from years of silent suffering to a dramatic rescue—highlights the power of persistence and care.
