Silverback gorillas live in troops. These troops consist of several females, their offspring, and is led by a dominant male. This dominant male is called the silverback.

Females stay with the group they were born in for life, whereas young males eventually move to find or even create their own troops. Within the troop, social interactions are shown by mutual grooming, playing, gestures and facial expressions.

The silverback gorilla is the largest and strongest male in the troop. This gorilla is the leader. He is responsible for protecting the troop from all threats. He would also mediate conflict within the group and make decisions about travel, feeding, and resting locations.

The silverback’s dominance is often displayed through impressive physical displays. This includes chest-beating, vocalizations, and intimidating postures.
