Not even Great Whites – let alone seals – want to cross paths with the ocean’s apex predators: Orcas. Otherwise known as killer whales, these intelligent and ruthless hunters often target wildlife in large pods, giving them little to no chance of survival.
The video below showcases their stubbornness and smartness, knowing that dislodging the iceway into open water would be their best chance for success.
Led by a matriarch, the three orcas split the iceway in two before harmoniously pushing it into the deep blue where there are no nearby safety nets. However, instead of continuously breaking the seals’ miniature iceberg, they propel water over the top, presumably catching the prey off-guard and, not so presumptuously, forcing them into open water.
In this instance, one unlucky crabeater seal drops into the water, after which a highway pursuit unfolds to the nearest iceway – remarkably, the seal wins.
