Personally, I never used to see the appeal of fishing – long hours of waiting and doing nothing, oftentimes in miserable weather and at ungodly hours. All that changed, though, once I was finally successful and was able to cook a delicious meal from something that I had caught all by myself. So, don’t write fishing off before you’ve given it a fair chance!

There are many possibilities as to why you are looking to expand your knowledge of this species. It could be to answer your curiosity, check out an item on your bucket list of fishing adventures, or even find a new type of entrée to add variety to your dietary routine. Either way, exploring the unique characteristics of this species is certainly worth taking some time and effort.

Walleye fish offer highly sought-after angling excitement because they are hardy fighters known for easily evading capture but motivated enough by their taste buds and hunger to take the bait when presented properly.

They also make great fresh-caught or commercially processed entrees with every imaginable cooking method.

Let’s explore what exactly walleye fish is all about!

Walleye fish are a popular choice among anglers due to their hardy and mysterious nature, making them a great catch. Walleye have keen eyesight, meaning they can spot bait in murky waters. At the same time, they have quick reflexes that help them avoid capture.

The species also has an appetite for live bait like worms and minnows and can easily be attracted to fishing lures. As a result, walleye often provide a great challenge for amateur and experienced fishermen alike.

They are known for their mild yet flavorful flesh; the fish is considered by many to be one of the best-tasting freshwater varieties available. In addition to being highly palatable, walleye are known for having leaner meat than other types of fish – making it ideal for preparing healthy meals.

To top it off, walleye can be prepared in many different ways – baked, grilled, steamed, or broiled – allowing cooks to create tasty dishes no matter their choice.

Appearance and Behavior

Walleye fish are most easily recognizable by their golden-green coloration. They also have white-tipped fins and a sprinkling of black spots across their body. Usually, they are about 24 to 28 inches long, but sometimes they can get as big as 36 inches. Generally, mature walleye fish prefer cooler waters. They typically live around rocky ledges, shallow weed beds, or any other structure where they can hide.

During the day, they usually remain inactive, conserving energy by staying in deeper parts of lakes and rivers with little light penetration. But as nightfall approaches, walleye become more active. As the smell of food entices them and attracts them to areas with greater concentrations of baitfish.

Feeding Habits

Walleyes are commonly called “picky eaters” because they prefer certain food over others. For example, they tend to go after smaller fish like perch and minnows, as well as crayfish and insects.

Regarding artificial baits, anglers have had great success using jigs tipped with grubs or minnows and spinners or spoons adorned with soft plastics or worms. The key is moving the bait slowly so that the walleye has time to spot it before deciding whether or not they want to bite.

Fishing for walleye is considered a challenge even for experienced anglers due to their cautious nature, making them difficult to catch when presented with something unfamiliar or unnatural in their environment. To increase your odds of landing a good-size walleye, here are a couple of tips on what gear and techniques you should use.

Gear and Techniques Needed To Catch a Walleye

When it comes to selecting gear for catching walleyes, the most important item is an ultralight spinning rod between 6’6″ – 7’6″ paired with a light line (4-8 lb test) spooled onto an open face reel preferably equipped with a drag system (free spool mode.) It also helps to choose lures resembling local prey, such as small crankbaits, spinners, marabou jigs, etc.

As far as technique goes, it’s best to cast your lure parallel to the shoreline cover, such as rocks, logs, etc. Allow it to sink, then slowly raise it back up towards shallower water while making slight pauses along the way. This will imitate an injured prey fish trying to escape predators, which is what activates the predatory instinct in walleyes, causing them to strike your lure!

Where To Find Walleyes In the Wild

Walleyes can be found throughout North America near deep underwater offsets where there is abundant vegetation or structure along shorelines, including rocks, weeds beds, and logs. Some popular locations include the Great Lakes region, like Lake Erie and Lake Superior.

Additionally, states such as Minnesota and Wisconsin are known hot spots due to their abundance of certain species of prey that attract large numbers of hungry walleyes each year!
