Few people know that alligators even make sound, even fewer people know that they’re in fact the loudest reptile on earth!

The bellow of an alligator is surprisingly loud, reaching around 90 decibels, which is as loud as a lawn mower or a nearby subway train.

Almost Comparable to a Lion’s Roar

Technically, the lion quite far from being one the loudest animals on earth – but maybe we could go as far as saying that it has the most famous roar?

To put it in perspective, an alligator’s bellow is not far off from a lion’s roar in terms of raw decibels. A lion’s roar can reach up to 114 decibels, which is definitely louder than an alligator but not far off.

What’s the Point Behind Their Bellow?

Although their bellow is scary-loud, alligators mostly use their bellow for social functions (and not scare.) Primarily, the bellow serves as a means of communication with other alligators, especially when they’re on the hunt for a mate. It also conveys territorial claims and establishes social hierarchies.

A man is having a training session with an alligator when it suddenly lets out its booming bellow. Other than being so surprisingly loud – it’s amazing that it can make so much noise without barely opening its mouth!
