This incident is equal parts problematic and incredible – a farmer lectures a wild lynx who caused trouble on his farm. Indeed we feel for the poor chickens and farmer, but a lynx gotta do what a lynx gotta do to get their paws on a snack, no? What do you think?
How Big Are Lynx Compared to Your Average Pet Cat?
The ease with which this upset farmer is carrying the lynx makes it seem as if he’s just carrying around a normal pet cat. Don’t be be fooled though – these are wild and dangerous animals.
The lynx is considerably larger than a typical house cat, measuring about 32 to 40 inches in length and weighing between 18 and 44 pounds. With its pointed ears, facial ruff, and short tail you can’t mistake the lynx for a house cat.
A Century-Old Conflict
Local wildlife can be a real problem for farmers as it can pose a threat to livestock and crop yields. Easy food sources, like chicken coops, naturally attract predatory creatures like lynxes.
It’s a conflict that has been going on for centuries, with no easy answer. On the one hand we need to produce food, on the other hand wildlife also needs to thrive (and most of the time we’re trespassing on their land..)
Illegal and Dangerous Behaviour
Although the video has amazed many became somewhat of a viral sensation, British Columbian authorities were clear in reminding both the farmer and watchers that what he did was in fact illegal. Handling wildlife in such a way is both disrespectful to the animal and posing a great danger to oneself – the farmer is lucky to be unharmed and to escape legal action.

While I can understand the farmer’s frustration of losing some of his chickens to this lynx, lecturing a wild animal will get you nowhere (unless it lands you in hospital.)
